WTF is it about, anyway?

Against It is mostly about Gaza, but you can generalize it to other genocidal conflicts. It’s written in the voice of a political consultant advising some waste-of-space officeholder on how to manage the long-term fallout from his/her record of support for mass murder: one part denial, two parts concealment, a dash of cowardice, and a heaping helping of utter contempt for the folks back home (i.e. the constituents).

The song is also a nod to Omar El Akkad’s excellent book, One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This.

Lyrics for Against It

You can’t unsee it
Best just turn your head away
from what’s been going on
before your eyes.
You realize

You won’t have to admit it
if you just look the other way
or stand behind the man
who’s closer than
you to the camera lens

Keep your head down and it’s going to be all right
One day you’ll always have
One day you’ll always have
One day you’ll always have been against it

You were AWOL
when that defund bill went down
then signed your name upon
two thousand pound
blockbuster bombs

Just don’t let them see you
when that fugitive drops in
and puts his arm around
your shoulder when
you turn around again

Just remember to frown when you shake his hand
And one day you’ll always have
One day you’ll always have
One day you’ll always have been against it

There’s one thing you can say
about the folks back home:
They’re never known to be
too good at remembering

Keep your head down and it’s going to be all right
One day you’ll always have
One day you’ll always have
One day you’ll always have been against it

There’s one thing you can say
about the folks back home

Weird ass music since 1986
